Founded in 1583, the University of Edinburgh is one of the six oldest and largest universities in the UK. It is located in the very heart of Scotland’s capital Edinburgh. Through our research and teaching excellence, we have been influencing the world for more than 400 years. It has more than 40,000 students from over 160 countries and more than 15,000 employees. In the QS2023 world rankings, we rank 15th and has remained in the top 50 in the global rankings. The University of Edinburgh has always been the first choice for Chinese students to study in Scotland and attracts the best students with an internationally renowned reputation for innovation. There are over 5,000 students from China currently studying at the University of Edinburgh.

We are a leading research university. In the recent results of the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF), the University of Edinburgh is fourth in the UK based on the quality and breadth of its research – known as research power – and is Scotland’s top-ranked institution. 24 Nobel laureates have been affiliated with the University of Edinburgh as alumni, faculty members or researchers. We are one of the most internationally collaborative research universities in the UK. We have more than 4,000 live research partnerships across 65 countries worldwide.

The university currently operates two Joint Institutes with leading Chinese partners: The Zhejiang University-University of Edinburgh Institute (ZJE) and Shanghai International College of Fashion and Innovation, Donghua University (SCF College). The Zhejiang University-University of Edinburgh Institute (ZJU-UoE Institute) is a collaboration in the field of Biomedical Sciences between UoE and ZJU. These two premier universities have established a joint international research institute at the International Campus of Zhejiang University in Haining, Zhejiang, building on the existing strengths of both institutions to foster collaborations in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research. Shanghai International College of Fashion and Innovation, Donghua University (SCF College) is a joint institution of international education jointly established by UoE and DHU. SCF College has two undergraduate programmes: Fashion Innovation and Interior Design.

We have a range of other longstanding partnerships centred around education and research. The University of Edinburgh is a key partner in the China-UK Low Carbon College with Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Here we collaboratively offer master programmes in Low Carbon Environment and Low Carbon Energy.
