We live in a world where resource extraction has tripled since 1970—and yet, most products are designed to be discarded, not renewed. From the 2,000 kg of raw materials needed to make a single microwave to mountains of packaging waste and overflowing landfills, the linear “take-make-waste” model is reaching its limits.

For businesses in China, this is no longer just an environmental concern—it’s a strategic imperative. With national policies accelerating the shift toward a circular economy—including the “Waste-Free Cities” initiative, mandatory Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) schemes, and Shanghai’s push for industrial park circularization—companies must act now to future-proof operations, meet compliance demands, and unlock innovation. The upcoming 15th Five-Year Plan is expected to further embed circularity into industrial policy, supply chain resilience, and green finance frameworks.

The Fresque de l’Économie Circulaire (Circular Economy Fresk) cuts through the noise. Designed for leaders who want to move beyond recycling slogans, it transforms complex systemic challenges into clear, actionable insight—starting today.

Pedagogy

This highly interactive 3-hour session uses a collaborative card game co-developed by engineers, economists, and sustainability experts, grounded in data from UNEP, Ellen MacArthur Foundation, and China’s own circular development roadmap. Participants work in small teams to connect over 40 cards covering:

• Hidden ecological footprints of everyday products
• Planned obsolescence vs. design for longevity and repair
• Industrial symbiosis (“one company’s waste is another’s resource”)
• Remanufacturing, reuse systems, and local bio-based materials

Through systems thinking and peer dialogue, teams uncover root causes of waste and co-create practical levers—contextualized for China’s evolving regulatory landscape, from Shanghai’s waste sorting mandates to national targets for 5 trillion RMB in circular economy output by 2025.

Workshop Overview

Guided by certified facilitators, the session unfolds in three phases:

• Discover: Map hidden material and energy flows in our current system
• Understand: Identify systemic barriers—and enablers—of circular transformation
• Act: Develop concrete actions for your organization in procurement, product design, logistics, or stakeholder engagement
