Highlights of BritCham STEM Racing Challenge Final Season 2024-25

30 Jun 2025

On 19 June, the 2024-25 BritCham Shanghai STEM Racing Challenge finals, hosted by the British Chamber of Commerce Shanghai, with the University of Nottingham Ningbo China as the Title Sponsor and GE5 Education as the Gold Sponsor, concluded successfully.

Seven teams from five international/bilingual schools—YK Pao School, Dulwich College Shanghai Pudong, Lucton School Shanghai, The British International School Shanghai Puxi, and Hiba Academy Shanghai — competed across the entire spectrum from engineering design to on-track execution.

This season’s challenge featured a judging panel comprising top automotive brand representatives and university experts. Representatives from GE5 Education, the Sino-British College of the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, Aston Martin, and Jaguar Land Rover jointly evaluated the teams. They scored participants across multiple criteria—including business plans, presentation skills, pitlane design, and engineering design—based on the official judging standards.

STEM Racing (formerly known as F1 in Schools) is an interdisciplinary technology challenge designed for students aged 9-19. It deeply integrates science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM), and business management, while receiving support from the F1 community. Participating teams experience the standard preparation process of an F1 racing team.

In this season’s final challenge, teams were tasked with designing the car body shell—including the front wing, rear wing, and side pods—to create an F1-style race car. They could utilize the STEM Racing Air Trace Visualisation System to visually assess the aerodynamic performance of their vehicles.

Participants also faced business challenges, requiring them to produce a comprehensive business plan including a portfolio, sponsorship proposal, and budget management. They then pitched this plan to the judges in a formal presentation.

In the final showdown, the student-built race cars competed in high-speed races on a dedicated 20-meter track. The champion team from Dulwich College Shanghai Pudong emerged victorious, their car securing the win by a razor-thin margin of 0.026 seconds in the intense speed competition.
