Join our November After Hours mixer with a unique Q&A session with the British Consul-General in Shanghai!

We extend a warm invitation to our members and friends in the British community to join Matt Burney, the British Consul-General in Shanghai, for a social networking evening.

The evening presents a unique Q&A session with the British Consul-General (BCG) in Shanghai. Attendees can submit questions in advance upon registration. More activities include mini-golf, open bays simulator games and lucky draw.

For the Q&A session, we encourage you to leave the questions you would like to ask the British Consul-General upon registration. Please kindly note that due to time constraints, the Chamber will make a selection on the questions we receive.

Matthew John Burney, CMG

His Majesty’s British Consul-General, Shanghai

Matthew (Matt) Burney assumes his role of the British Consul-General Shanghai from September 2023. Prior to this role, Matt was the Minister of the British Embassy in Beijing, responsible for managing the UK’s education and cultural relationship with China. He was also Director of the British Council in China, where he oversaw the UK’s cultural relations and educational exchange work and led one of the largest country operations in the British Council’s global network of 100+ offices.

Matt has held numerous strategic leadership positions since joining the British Council in 1997, promoting cultural and educational opportunities in Japan, the Czech Republic and Ireland.

In 2000, Matt spearheaded the British cultural and education work in South West China, establishing the Culture and Education Section of the British Consulate-General in Chongqing. From 2011 to 2015, he was Consul at British Consulate-General Shanghai, and Area Director of the British Council in East China. During this time he oversaw the growth of a dynamic and ambitious programme driven through close collaboration and partnership with UK and Chinese cultural and educational organisations.

He was recognised by His Majesty The King in the 2023 New Year’s Honours for services to cultural relations. As a result, he has been admitted into the Most Distinguished Order of St Michael and St George (CMG).

Notes:

In case of cancellation, please kindly note you must email the BritCham Shanghai Event staff Anne.Lin@britishchambershanghai.cn before 5 pm, 28 Nov. Due to the service charges of Glueup and online payment platforms, we can only partially refund up to 90% of your ticket price and payment will be processed within 14 days after the event via your original payment method. However, it is non-refundable for a cancellation request made beyond the above-mentioned timeframe.

BritCham Shanghai might take photos from the event and post these on its communication channels (for example website, newsletter and social media platforms) in order to create awareness of these events. By attending this event you consent to British Chamber of Commerce Shanghai taking and using such photos as described above.

To take any professional photography or video of the event, please inform the secretariat in advance, including:

Proposed content at least 3 working days before planned release date;
Proposed dates for post event release through the BritCham media channels;
Ensure all speakers have written confirmation.
