Transforming the traditional take-make-waste system. Creating a thriving circular economy that can benefit everyone within the limits of our planet.

Event details

This session is part of BritCham Shanghai’s SDG event series and focuses on SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.

Do you know that:

  • Each year, an estimated one-third of all food produced – equivalent to 1.3 billion tonnes worth around $1 trillion – ends up rotting in the bins of consumers and retailers, or spoiling due to poor transportation and harvesting practices.
  • In 2021, the Double 11 Shopping Festival continued to break the record with total sales of over 965 billion yuan and nearly 1.16 billion packages were waiting for delivery on this day.

Behind these figures lied unresponsible consumption where consumers made decisions not based on needs, but desire and worry of missing something. It came with tremendous environmental costs – from overproduction, exploitation of natural resources to food and packaging waste. To obtain a more sustainable lifecycle of consumption and production, more companies and consumers are investigating the ‘circular economy model, which employs not only waste management, but also reuse, recycling and responsible manufacture.

At this event, BritCham Shanghai is delighted to invite extraordinary speakers from different industries to discuss how to reduce the waste to achieve a circular economy.
