“Sustainable tourism is tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities.” – by The World Tourism Organization

Event details

This session is part of BritCham Shanghai’s SDG event series and focuses on SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth

Tourism is one of the driving forces of global economic growth and currently provides for 1 in 11 jobs worldwide. By giving access to decent work opportunities in the tourism sector, society – particularly youth and women – can benefit from increased skills and professional development. That’s why one of the targets under SDG 8 is that “By 2030, devise and implement policies to promote sustainable tourism that creates jobs and promotes local culture and products.”

Whilst tourism is one of the sectors that have been most significantly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and the global tourism has come to a standstill, more and more people start to think about what travelling really means to them, what impact their footprints would make when it comes to culture, environment and community.
