Sustainability & ESG Business Summit 2022 – New Horizons: The Era of ESG

Mr. Siddharth Chatterjee took office as the UN Resident Coordinator in China on 16 January 2021 and presented his letter of credentials to the President of the People’s Republic of China on 14 April 2021. The Resident Coordinator is the highest-ranking representative of the UN Development System in China.

Mr. Chatterjee has more than 25 years of experience in international cooperation, sustainable development, humanitarian coordination and peace and security. Most recently, he served as the UN Resident Coordinator in Kenya after holding other leadership positions across the Organization, including as Resident Representative of the UNDP and Representative of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Kenya; Regional Director for the Middle East and Europe for the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) in Denmark; and Chief of Staff in the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI). He also held leadership positions with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Indonesia, Somalia, South Sudan, and Sudan, and in UN Peacekeeping Operations with the UN Mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina (UNMIBH). Mr. Chatterjee has also served in the Red Cross Movement (IFRC) as the Chief Diplomat and Head of Resource Mobilization in Switzerland.

A 3 times TEDx speaker, he is a regular opinion contributor on humanitarian and development issues for a range of journals including Newsweek, Los Angeles Times, The Hill, Reuters, Huffington Post, Forbes, CNBC Africa, CNN, Al Jazeera, The Guardian, and a number of mainstream Chinese journals.

Mr. Chatterjee holds a master’s degree in public policy from Princeton University in the United States of America and a bachelor’s degree from the National Defence Academy in India.

Born in Wolverhampton, Chris graduated from the University of Cambridge in 1981 and joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO). Previous roles with the FCO include as HM Consul-General Guangzhou (2003-6); Minister and Deputy Head of Mission at the British Embassy in Beijing (2008-12); and Director, British Trade and Cultural Office in Taipei (2013-16). Prior to his current role, Chris was Deputy Head, EU Delegation to China for the European External Action Service. Chris has also worked at the Cabinet Office and the Department of the Environment (from May 1997 Department of the Environment, Transport & the Regions).

Mr. LV was born in 1976 and holds a double bachelor’s degree in engineering. He has served in various positions including Executive Deputy General Manager and General Manager of SUAEE Central Enterprise Transaction Headquarters, and General Manager of Shanghai United Assets and Equity Exchange Holdings Co., Ltd.

Mr. Lee has extensive experience in the onshore and offshore capital market. Before joining LOTUS, Mr. Lee was the Head of Capital Access at CITIC-CLSA since 2011, and the China strategist of Jefferies HK since 2019. His career also includes more than five years working experience within FIAT where he participated in product development, distribution development, brand development and strategic partnership.

Dr. Eugene Qian began his investment banking career in the early 1990s, with N M Rothschild & Sons Limited, the investment bank group, in London.

From 1994 to 2018, Dr. Qian worked in Hong Kong for 18 years, serving as senior management roles of APAC and China in top financial institutions such as N M Rothschild & Sons Limited, UBS, Deutsche Bank and Citi. Dr. Qian has been based in Shanghai since 2013, rejoined UBS in June 2015 as Group President, China. He was appointed Chairman of the UBS AG’s China Strategy Committee in 2017 and General Manager of UBS Securities at the end of the same year. In October 2019, he was appointed Chairman of UBS Securities. Since July 2022, he was also appointed China Country Head of UBS AG, and is fully responsible for the strategic planning and execution of UBS AG’s Investment Banking, Wealth Management and Asset Management businesses in China.

Dr. Qian has more than 25 years of experience in the banking industry, and has extensive experience in Investment Banking and Corporate Banking in China and abroad. Dr. Qian has led numerous domestic and international M&A advisory and capital market financing projects, with a total transaction value in excess of US$100 billion, of which many award-winning landmark transactions, serving clients such as Fortune 500 top multinational companies, China’s leading state-owned and private enterprises as well as high net worth and ultra high net worth clients and so on. Dr. Qian was named Top 100 expert in 2015 by the Pudong New Area Government. Further recognized as a 2017 Pudong Economic Person of the Year award, and a Top 10 financial star in Lujiazui in 2017. Won Shanghai Financial Sector Leader Award in 2019. Elected as a Supervisor (member of the Board of Supervisors) at the Shanghai Stock Exchange in April 2020.

Sherry is the founding director of the University of Manchester Worldwide China Centre in Shanghai. She manages China Centre’s business strategies, alumni relations and partnerships in the region. Sherry is standing committee member of Shanghai Overseas Returned Scholars Association and vice president of SORSA UoM association. Sherry was appointed as an envoy to Manchester China Forum in 2013 and awarded ‘women leadership award’ and other influential awards in the field of education at municipal and national levels in recent years. She holds Masters’ degree in Contemporary literature in London as well as MBA degree from the University of Manchester. She was executive committee member of the British Chamber of Commerce Shanghai and currently serves as vice chair of the Education Focus Group. She published a few books such as overseas Chinese corporate reputation and Preparing for multiple challenges on the Belt and Road.

Ms. Kou graduated with a master’s degree in Sustainable Development Leadership from Cambridge University and a master’s degree in Management from Cardiff University in the United Kingdom. She joined the green finance industry in the EU carbon trading center in London in 2007, and she is one of the earliest professionals in China to engage in this trade.

In January 2022, he was appointed President and Chair of Halma Asia Pacific. Since then, he has been responsible for growing Halma’s 30-plus existing companies in China and leading an M&A team focused on the M&A opportunities and operations within the three sectors of Safety, Environmental & Analysis, and Healthcare that Halma operates in China.

Before joining Halma, Aldous Wong already had rich experience in senior leadership roles at GE, Honeywell, Oracle, HP and other Global 500 companies and start-ups engaged in IT, technology, industry, healthcare, etc.

Aldous holds an MBA from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

Gary Yang is a leadership member of Dentons Global ESG Committee, as well as head of environmental practice group at Dentons Shanghai. Before Dentons, Gary Yang worked as Legal Director at Fortune 500 chemical MNCs as well as legal counsel at Simmons&Simmons LLP and Zhonglun Law Firm. He has passed the bar in China and New York.

Gary has in-depth experience in investments with climate and environmental impact. He assists clients in disputes, greenwashing, government investigation and corporate criminal liability in areas of ESG non-compliance. Federico is currently the Managing Director for Asia Pacific of ACT Commodities Group, and he holds a seat in the board of IETA (International Emission Trading Association). After working as renewable energy analyst in Italy and as commodities derivatives broker in London, Federico joined ACT in 2012. He initially led the activities in Southern Europe and then expanded his responsibility to all the new business development of the Group. In March 2017 he became the managing director of ACT Financial Solutions, directing all the trading activities of carbon certificates, obtaining the license of Investment Firm by the Dutch financial authority.

During Federico’s employment at ACT, the company evolved in line with the diversity of environmental products available. To aid the growth of the company Federico re-joined ACT Group and moved to Singapore to manage ACT’s overall activities in the APAC region, where ACT’s growing presence has been established to guide new and existing clients to meet their sustainability targets.

Mr. Cheung joined Arup in 2001 and has rich experience in design and management. He is now the geographic leader of Mainland China.

As a project director during his stay at Arup, Penny participated in many large-scale complex projects, including Shanghai Xujiahui ITC, The Hub Shanghai, Hangzhou Westlake66 Plaza, Chongqing Raffles City and Chongqing International Land-sea Center.

Brian Feng served as founding GM of a Private Equity firm with Fortune 500 Central SOE and managed over 1.5GW investment in Renewable Energy. He was sponsored by the EU to study in UK, France, Italy and Belgium. He published three books, among which Guide Book for Investment and M&A Along the Belt and Road Countries was awarded the Chinese National Publishing Foundation in 2019. He holds a Master’s degree from Emory University. He also followed the executive program at MIT Sloan, ESCP Paris and Solvay Brussels. In 2008, he was approved by the Chinese government as Professorate Senior Economist.

Xuan’s study background is in environmental and energy management. Responsible for corporate engagement and promoting supply chain best practices in CDP China. Improving transparency of environmental management and enhancing supply chain resilience of Chinese companies by engaging with stakeholders mainly listed companies and purchasers.

Prior to joining CDP, Xuan had worked in emission reduction and carbon market for years with plenty of experience in GHG inventory for both regions and industries and providing solutions on energy and emissions. Familiar with carbon reduction projects in national and international schemes. Also participated in national and regional carbon-related Standard drafting and local low-carbon development planning.

Debbie Joined Apex in 2020 and brought with us over 20 years of experience in financial industry.  Throughout her career life, she held senior positions in professional service firms including KPMG, TMF Group in several cities, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing.  She started her career with KPMG Hong Kong and reallocated to Shanghai in 2007 till now. She spent over a decade in various China-stationed consultancy roles.  As our Country Head, China, Debbie led the service team to serve asset managers, corporates and family offices with a focus on Private Equity and Real Estate, Venture Capital and Hedged Funds.

Nana Li is the Head of Sustainability & ESG, Asia-Pacific at Impax Asset Management. Nana joined Impax in 2022 and is responsible for leading Impax’s sustainability and ESG research and advocacies in Asia-Pacific. Nana researches, prioritizes and organizes ESG engagements with Impax’s investee companies, manages external sustainability and ESG-related inquiries, and assists in the ongoing development of the Impax proprietary ESG-analysis and methodologies.

Prior to joining Impax Nana worked as the Research and Project Director, covering China, at the Asian Corporate Governance Association (ACGA). At ACGA, Nana published five significant reports relating to corporate governance research in Asia. Whilst there she also presented to the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges, the Shenzhen Asset Management Association, and spoke at international conferences hosted by a number of financial institutions and international organisations including Emerging Markets Investors Alliance, GRI, AmCham Shanghai, CLSA, HSBC, Deutsche Bank, Morgan Stanley and the International Corporate Governance Network. Upon joining Impax, Nana remains a specialist consultant to the ACGA to advise on corporate governance issues related to China.

Nana also sits on the Financial Capital Committee of the International Corporate Governance Network, the ESG Committee of the Women in Finance Asia and the Caixin China ESG30 Forum.

Nana has an MBA from the University of Chicago (Honors), a Master of Finance from the University of Hong Kong (Dean’s List), and a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of New South Wales (Distinction). She is a CFA charterholder.

As a tech entrepreneur and climate researcher, Dr. Bing Sun has a PhD degree in Planning and Environmental Management from the University of Manchester. He is awarded distinguished researcher of Fudan University, and also serves as the director of Carbon Neutralization Digital Intelligence Lab–a government-university-industry innovation platform. Dr. Sun has over 10 years of expertise and practice in low-carbon planning and governance, currently leading a climate tech company in Shanghai. His work has led to a list of world-leading publications (e.g. Cities, EPM, etc.) and more than 30 intellectual property rights.

Jason Tu is the Co-founder and CEO of MioTech, with an MBA from Stanford University. He has extensive work and management experience in the financial industry, having worked at Standard Chartered Bank in Hong Kong and leading business development and management in China for startups around the world, such as Silicon Valley unicorn Robinhood and Hong Kong unicorn WeLab.
In 2017, he founded MioTech, which is dedicated to solving the challenges of climate change, sustainable development, carbon neutrality and social responsibility faced by financial institutions, enterprises and governments, playing a leading role in improving ESG performance for enterprises in Asia.

Tony Wang is Partner at Nordic Match, a financial advisor focusing on Sino-Nordic M&A and capital raising transactions. Nordic Match mainly servers blue-chip listed companies, Private Equity Sponsors and Family offices across the two regions. Tony is a Swedish national and also a board member at Swedcham and DCCC.

Wenhong Xie is the Head of China Programme of Climate Bonds Initiative (CBI), an investor-focused NGO that aims at mobilizing capital market for climate change solutions. Based in Beijing, he is responsible for leading CBI’s projects and businesses to help accelerate China’s rapidly growing green capital market. In addition to managing standard development, research and liaising with government agencies, multilateral organizations, verifiers, underwriters and investors, he also provides advice on green bond issuance and certification to support potential green bond issuers such as banks, state-owned enterprises, municipalities, and large corporates.

Prior to joining CBI, Wenhong worked as an economist at Tsinghua’s Center for Finance and Development (led by Dr. Ma Jun) and a consultant for the International Finance Corporation, in addition to a number of think tanks and NGOs in environment and international development. Wenhong has an M.A. in International Policy Studies from Stanford University.

Lily has more than 20 years of experience in corporate operations management in China and the Asia Pacific region, including finance and accounting, supply chain, procurement and legal. She has worked in industries including retail, industrial, luxury and FMCG

Lily has joined LVMH since 2004. With her industry expertise, business acumen and retail operation experience, she has served as Senior Vice President of Finance and Operations for LVMH Perfumes & Cosmetics China and CFO of Ku De Ta Group, a subsidiary of LVMH Fund Investment. Since 2018, She has served as Chief Operating Officer of Sephora Greater China

Mr. Zhu Ling is the County Lead of Capital Markets in CDP, covering markets of Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and mainland China. Ling has more than 10 years work experience in the financial service sector and sustainable finance area. Before joining CDP, Ling worked in China Development Bank and the financial service section of the UK government in China. Ling holds a Master’s Degree in Fudan University and studied low carbon economy in the faculty of environmental economics and management, where he contributed to several projects in climate transition such as Shanghai Low Carbon Economy Development Route 2050.

Shing is the Deputy Head of Equity Research at Fidelity’s China onshore mutual fund business based in Shanghai, with overall responsibilities in building out Fidelity’s onshore fundamental equity research capabilities including ESG integration.

Shing joined Fidelity in 2016, spending the first 4 years as an Australian Equity Research Analyst based in Fidelity’s Sydney office. He covered multiple sectors including, Infrastructure, Consumer and Building Materials. This provided him with a front-row seat view into leading-edge sustainable investing in one of the world’s largest pension fund markets.

Shing graduated from the University of Auckland with a double degree in Bachelor of Engineering and Bachelor of Commerce. He is a CFA charter holder and a member of the CFA Society of Shanghai.

Rhys has been Counsellor for Financial and Professional Services since July 2020, but joined the Embassy in June 2018 as First Secretary, Financial Policy. He is now responsible for all of the embassy’s financial and professional services functions, including its commercial relationships under the Department for International Trade, financial policy, the Financial Services Prosperity Fund and the UK PACT China Green Finance Programme. In his previous role he was responsible for the embassy’s relationships with China’s financial regulators and was the lead negotiator on financial services for the Economic and Financial Dialogue, and will continue to oversee these functions. Before moving to China Rhys worked at HM Treasury for five years, including roles as Head of Financial Services Trade and Investment and in ministerial private office. During this time he was HM Treasury’s representative on the G20 Green Finance Study Group and led HM Government’s green finance strategy. Prior to joining government Rhys worked for the UK’s financial services regulator.

Maria McDermott is the Asia Business Development representative for Jersey Finance, a non-profit organisation promoting the use of Jersey as an International Finance Centre.

She has over twenty years of experience working in the finance industry and is experienced in investment funds, private wealth, stock exchange listings, compliance, risk management and project management.  She has also undertaken board secretarial, governance and post IPO compliance work for companies listed on stock exchanges in Europe and Asia.

Maria has been based in Asia for the last ten years having transferred to Hong Kong for one of the offshore law firms to develop the fiduciary services business. During her time in Asia she has also worked for various listed entities and financial service providers in Singapore and Shanghai, and is now based full time in Shanghai.

Maria is an Associate Member of the Chartered Governance Institute, formerly the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators, and a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants.

Timo has over 25 years of experience in capital market transactions and management experience in global accounting/consulting and law firms.

Timo started his professional career as an assistant product manager at Nokia UK. He was nominated as assistant to the Head of Delegation during two UK State visits to China led by former UK Prime Minister Tony Blaire and Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott. Previously, Timo was the partner, Vice COO / Markets leader of King & Wood Mallesons (KWM). Before KWM, he was the Chief Business Development Officer and managing director of PwC Greater China. Timo was the deal maker for nearly 300 IPOs or private placements.

Timo had received an MBA from Royal Holloway College, University of London, and an MSc
in International Economy from Manchester Business School.

• Steven was lead partner of operations and supply chain management business at PwC China/HK Strategy& Consulting with around 20 years of combined strategy consulting and management experience before
• Had rich experience of Aerospace and Automotive, Consumer Market, Real Estate, Utility and Renewable Energy, TMT and PE related industries
• Deep operational experience in the areas of growth strategy and target operating model development, end-to-end process design and optimization, program management, performance improvement and value maximization, channel management, route to market and promotion analysis and sustainability strategy and value creation topics
• Holds Master of Science degree of Manchester Business School, specializing in operations management
• Has completed the SCOR-P and CPIM program by APICS and Six Sigma Black Belt

Ted is a seasoned corporate executive. He has a diverse industrial and automotive background in his past 20+ years’ experience serving leading global companies including JD Power, Danaher, Stanley Black & Decker and Smiths Group.

Born and brought up in Beijing, Ted and his family have lived in Shanghai for over 12 years.

Eric is the partner responsible for managing PwC’s government relationship and the services to government in Shanghai and central China. He has more than 20 years experience in professional services. Eric graduated from Fudan University in Shanghai. He lived and worked in New York.

Eric acts as advisors for many government agencies and has led or been involved in various sizable projects, including consulting, auditing and financial advisory. Eric has extensive experiences in providing strategy, management, financial consulting services and audits to government organisations and companies. Eric has in-depth knowledge in accounting, auditing and global capital markets.  He helped many companies to complete unique transactions including IPOs and M&As.

Eric is a member of China Institute of Certified Accountant. He is a member of the standing committee of Sichuan CICPA.

James graduated from University of Manchester in 2015 and began his career with the British Chamber in Shanghai as the Business Development Manager. James comes with a truly international perspective having worked in three different continents throughout his studies and has now lived in China for over 5 years. James has a vast amount of knowledge on how British business operates within the China market with an oversight of their operational challenges and the market access barriers.

James was made Executive Director in June 2019.

Heidi Berg is a Norwegian national passionate about sustainability and ESG. Over the last twelve years, she has worked with impact investments in Africa, financial inclusion in South Asia and sustainable textiles in China. Currently, Heidi serves as Head of Partnership Development for Nordic Innovation and Sustainability Shanghai, a low carbon emission development project in Hongqiao. She is also vice chairman of the Norwegian Business Association in China. Heidi is a GRI Certified Sustainability Professional, and holds a Master of International Management from the Norwegian School of Business Administration and Economics and University of St Gallen.

Alex Roberts has been working in Shanghai with British-headquartered law firm, Linklaters LLP, since 2012 and previously studied and worked in Beijing (first in 2005). Alex has been involved with the Chamber almost since arriving in Shanghai and am proud to have seen its development over this time with a dedicated group of staff and members. Alex is passionate about continuing to drive British and international business opportunities in China through his legal expertise and network, helping to organise framework for knowledge-sharing events and improving the dialogue between the UK and China for the good of all stakeholders.
