UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer arrived today in Shanghai, following the conclusion of the Beijing leg of his first official visit to China. The Prime Minister is accompanied by the Secretary of State for Business and Trade, Peter Kyle, and a delegation of senior UK business and cultural leaders.
Reflecting BritCham Shanghai’s longstanding role as the primary platform for engagement between the UK government and the British business community in East China, members of BritCham Shanghai, including the Chamber’s Executive Committee, were invited to join them at a business reception at The Orbit this evening. The event provided an opportunity for members to engage with the visiting delegation and discuss priorities for UK–China commercial cooperation and long-term business engagement in the China market.

Welcoming the first visit by a UK Prime Minister to Shanghai since 2018, BritCham Shanghai Chair Edward Weeks said:
“As the home of British business in Shanghai, BritCham is proud of its 110-year legacy building bridges between the UK and China, and between business and government. We welcome the Prime Minister and UK delegation to Shanghai. Their visit acts as a powerful signal of the enduring importance of such relationships and reinforces the vital role that British businesses in Shanghai and East China play in supporting strong UK–China commercial ties and a constructive bilateral relationship.”

As part of this important visit, BritCham Shanghai will support and co-organise the UK–China Business Forum, bringing together senior business leaders to explore opportunities for bilateral trade and investment.
As UK–China economic engagement enters a new phase, BritCham Shanghai remains committed to strengthening connections between business communities, encouraging mutually beneficial trade and investment, and contributing to sustained cooperation between the two countries.
Further updates on the visit will follow.
