BritCham Shanghai Announces Winners of the 2026 Sustainability & Innovation Awards

24 Jun 2026

Innovation. Collaboration. Impact.

On 23 June, the British Chamber of Commerce Shanghai successfully hosted the 2026 Sustainability & Innovation Summit, where the winners of the 2026 Sustainability & Innovation Awards were officially announced.

Now in its fourth year, the Sustainability & Innovation Awards have become one of Shanghai’s leading platforms recognising excellence in sustainability. This year’s Awards featured eight categories, with three new award categories introduced, including Green Tech & Digital Innovation, Climate Action, and Outbound Investment, celebrating pioneering ideas, technologies, business solutions and leadership that are accelerating sustainable development across industries.

This year’s Awards attracted 113 applications, from which 43 businesses, organisations and individuals were shortlisted in the first round of judging. Representing more than 30 industry segments, the finalists showcased innovative practices across sectors including new energy, advanced materials, energy efficiency, education and many more.

During his speech at the summit, Sohail Shaikh, British Deputy Trade Commissioner for China, highlighted that sustainability is no longer a niche issue but an increasingly central consideration for businesses worldwide.

“The awards being presented today are therefore important. They recognise leadership, and highlight practical examples of what works, from innovation and climate action to partnerships and social impact.”

Sohail said that the UK continues to invest in clean energy, green finance and innovation.

“In China, we see rapid progress in renewable energy deployment, electrification, and a growing focus on sustainable supply chains, industrial transformation and responsible investment. The UK brings strengths in innovation, finance and regulatory expertise. China brings scale, manufacturing capability and speed of deployment. Together, this creates real potential for collaboration, not only to address climate challenges, but to support sustainable and resilient growth.”

Following a rigorous judging process, eight outstanding organisations and individuals were recognised for their contributions to advancing sustainability and innovation across diverse sectors.

The winners of the 2026 Sustainability & Innovation Awards are:

The discussions kicked off with a keynote speech by Chair of the Sustainability & Innovation Awards 2026, Dr. Lu Jian Zhong, setting a forward-looking tone for the day.

He urged companies to abandon legacy profit-driven models, stating, “Social purpose should serve as the fundamental driving force for corporate growth.” This framework challenged businesses to integrate social and environmental pain points directly into their core strategy to unlock new market opportunities.

“Enterprises can absolutely solve social issues through commercial solutions,” Dr Lu said, as a powerful reminder of the Chamber’s commitment to fostering impactful, sustainable business ecosystems.

The Summit also featured five panel discussions that explored the key opportunities and challenges shaping the future of sustainable business. Covering topics from AI and digital innovation to sustainable supply chains, ESG in outbound investment, social impact and cross-sector partnerships, the sessions offered practical insights from leading businesses and industry experts.

While each discussion focused on a different aspect of sustainability, a common message emerged: technology is a powerful enabler, but meaningful progress depends on strong partnerships, local engagement and embedding sustainability into long-term business strategy rather than treating it as a standalone initiative.

In his closing remark, Stuart Dunn, Executive Director of BritCham Shanghai, emphasised, “Throughout the day, one message has come through clearly: sustainability is no longer a standalone agenda. It is increasingly shaping how organisations innovate, invest, build partnerships and create long-term value.”

With the support of ERM, University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC), Swire, The University of Manchester China Centre, and Green Spotlight, the Summit brought together more than 100 participants to exchange ideas, share best practices and explore practical approaches to sustainable business development.

We extend our sincere thanks to all winners, finalists and applicants for their outstanding contributions to this year’s Sustainability & Innovation Awards. Building on this success, BritCham Shanghai will keep commitment in frosting more thematic events commencing in the second half of the year, to spotlight exemplary case studies and share valuable insights drawn from the Awards.

We invite you to stay engaged for upcoming events to connect, learn, and be inspired.

Highlights of panel discussions:

Panel 1: Beyond ESG: How AI, Green Technology and Digital Innovation Are Reshaping Sustainable Growth

The discussion spotlights practical solutions for embedding ESG deeply into corporate culture and operational life cycles rather than treating it merely as a reporting exercise. The experts highlight the transition of AI into a physical infrastructure system and share insights on leveraging green technology, localised supply chains, and human-AI collaboration to drive sustainable growth.

Panel 2:Navigating The New Era: AI-empowered Sustainable Supply Chain Management

The discussion, spanning industries including academia (UNNC, Donghua University), manufacturing (Edrington), consulting (Be-Cause) and services (Sedex), delved into how businesses can harness Artificial Intelligence to pioneer product, process, and business model innovations within sustainable supply chains. Panellists highlighted AI’s growing role in enhancing supply chain visibility, strengthening resilience, improving supplier engagement and supporting more informed decision-making, while emphasising that human judgement, systems thinking and stakeholder collaboration remain essential.

Panel 3: Managing ESG Risks in Cina Outbound Investments

Moderated by ERM, this panel discussion features insights from senior experts at HSBC China, Envision Energy, Shenzhen Senior Technology Material, and Ganfeng Lithium on navigating the complexities of Chinese outbound business. The speakers emphasise that overcoming geopolitical, regulatory, and financing hurdles requires a shift from pure exporting to deep local integration. Ultimately, they highlight that building robust, data-backed ESG frameworks and actively fostering local talent and community infrastructure are critical to ensuring long-term operational resilience abroad.

Panel 4: Bridging Promise and Practice: Making Social Impact Real, Local and Measurable

This panel discussion features insights from leaders across diverse sectors, including consumer goods (Reckitt), hospitality (IHG Hotels & Resorts), and education (The University of Manchester, Shanghai Green Light-Year Environmental Service Center). The panellists explore how to effectively fulfil social responsibilities, highlighting the importance of balancing global ambitions with local realities, keeping people at the centre of initiatives, and accelerating knowledge transfer alongside cultivating future responsible leaders. Ultimately, they interpret social impact through multiple dimensions, including business alignment, deep community connection, talent empowerment, and cross-sector collaboration, which demonstrate how it can be deeply embedded into an organisation’s core DNA.

Panel 5: Strategic partnerships can drive innovation, accelerate sustainability outcomes

In this session, the participating enterprises, spanning the green property development (Swire), hospitality (Colorful Earth), and dental care (Grin Natural) industries, are deeply focused on sustainability priorities such as carbon neutrality, waste reduction, and local biodiversity protection. Recognising that ambitious environmental and social goals cannot be achieved in isolation, panellists share how they leverage a diverse network of partners, ranging from government authorities and academic experts to local schools, supply chains, and communities. By embedding these relationships into their core strategic frameworks, they successfully translate long-term commitments into collaborative actions, whether through co-founding local ecological initiatives or co-developing innovative, 100% recyclable product materials.
