The British Chamber of Commerce Shanghai (BritCham Shanghai) proudly marked its 110th anniversary with a celebratory Birthday Dinner at the Fairmont Peace Hotel on 20 May. The event welcomed 110 members, sponsors, partners, and friends from the UK–China business community, blending reflections on the Chamber’s distinguished past with announcements for its upcoming year-long celebrations.
A Night of Heritage and Inspiration
Guests began the evening with a welcome reception before being seated for a programme rich in historical insights and forward-looking speeches.
Keynote Address: Matt Burney CMG, British Consul-General in Shanghai, traced the Consulate’s enduring support from Rutherford Alcock’s 1850 recognition of the first Shanghai British Chamber of Commerce, through Sir Everard Fraser’s 1915 honorary presidency, to today’s robust UK–China partnership.
Personal Reflection: Betty Barr, the oldest China-born British member, shared heartfelt recollections of growing up in Shanghai and fostering cross-cultural ties, moving many to applause.
Historical Vignettes: George Bian, an independent historian, brought to life the Chamber’s early meetings and its evolution through periods of challenge and renewal.
