On 13 May 2026, the British Council and BritCham Shanghai jointly hosted a UK-China Higher Education Roundtable at BritCham Shanghai’s Zhejiang Office, located in the Hangzhou International Talent Entrepreneurship & Innovation Park, Gongshu District, Hangzhou.
The roundtable brought together representatives from the UK government agencies, UK and Chinese higher education institutions, and stakeholders involved in UK-China education collaboration.
The session opened with welcome remarks by Stuart Dunn, Executive Director of BritCham Shanghai, and Catherine Sinclair-Jones, Director of the British Council in East China. Their remarks highlighted the importance of continued dialogue and collaboration between UK and Chinese higher education institutions, as well as the role of platforms such as BritCham Shanghai in supporting meaningful cross-sector engagement in the region.
Following the opening remarks, Leina Shi, Director Education for the British Council, China, and Jian Li, Deputy Director Education for the British Council, China, delivered a market intelligence update from the British Council. The briefing shared insights into the latest trends in UK-China higher education engagement, including transnational education (TNE), student recruitment, student mobility, and the changing needs and expectations of Chinese students considering study in the UK.

During the roundtable discussion, participants shared practical perspectives on how UK and Chinese institutions are responding to changes in the operating environment, as well as opportunities to strengthen long-term, sustainable and outcomes-focused collaboration. The discussion also explored how institutions can better support students through stronger career pathways, deeper industry engagement and more effective partnership models.

After the event, representatives from the Zhejiang Provincial Science Exchange and Talent Service Center led the guests on a tour of the Hangzhou International Talent Innovation and Entrepreneurship Park, introducing the park’s relevant policies and development plans.

The event reinforced the role of BritCham Shanghai Zhejiang Office as a convening platform for UK-China education dialogue in Zhejiang. By bringing together government agencies, universities, sector experts and local partners, the Office continues to support networking across education, innovation, talent development and international collaboration.
