On 23 October 2025, the British Chamber of Commerce Shanghai (BritCham Shanghai) hosted its 110th Anniversary Government Dinner at the InterContinental Shanghai Hongqiao NECC Hotel. The evening saw a vibrant gathering of over 300 guests from both the Chinese and British governments and business communities, celebrating the longstanding partnership and shared success between China and the United Kingdom.

In the opening remarks, Kirsten Johnston, Chair, BritCham Shanghai, reflected that the Chamber’s story began in 1915 in Shanghai, when a group of British merchants gathered at the British Consulate. Their goal was not only to found an institution, but to support one another through uncertain times and seek new opportunities amid change.
She highlighted that when China and the UK work together, extraordinary results are achieved—beyond expectations, both in vision and in practice. These achievements go beyond business, enriching society and improving lives. Throughout its history, the Chamber has remained a vital bridge—not only connecting enterprises, but also deepening the friendship between the two nations.

Peter Wilson CMG, British Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China, remarked that the Chamber’s century-long legacy embodies key British traits—resilience and long-term vision—and reflects the best of British entrepreneurship and adventurous spirit. Innovation, he noted, is the United Kingdom’s enduring tradition and its source of strength.
He reiterated that the UK Government and the Prime Minister has made very clear commitments, which is that they want a relationship with China that is consistent, that is long-term and is strategic.
“We’re in it for the long haul. We’re here for the long term and the United Kingdom is long on China,” he said.

Gu Jun, Deputy Secretary-General of the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government, highlighted that the UK remains one of Shanghai’s key trading partners, with bilateral trade exceeding RMB 97.4 billion in 2024 and RMB 90.3 billion in the first eight months of 2025. Over two-thirds of British companies in China have their headquarters in Shanghai, with total investment exceeding US$ 4.8 billion.
He noted that Shanghai offers vast market potential, strong innovation capacity, and a world-class business environment—making it one of the most attractive destinations for foreign investment. Going forward, the city looks forward to working closely with BritCham Shanghai to foster a more stable and predictable environment, expand cooperation, and create new growth opportunities.

Edward Weeks, Vice Chair of BritCham Shanghai and Senior Executive Vice President (Designate), Deputy Chief Executive Officer, HSBC Bank (China) Company Limited, noted that 2025 also marks the 160th anniversary of HSBC’s founding. Since opening its doors in Hong Kong and Shanghai in 1865, HSBC has been committed to facilitating international investment and trade—goals that align closely with those of the Chamber.
He emphasised that China’s vast market and growing consumer base present tremendous opportunities for British businesses. HSBC continues to help multinational companies invest and grow in China, while supporting more Chinese enterprises in expanding into global markets, including the UK.

Anthea Wang, Executive Vice President, Public Relations and Corporate Affairs, JLR China, reflected on the brand’s 15-year journey in China, highlighting how the company has seamlessly blended British luxury with Chinese manufacturing through innovative partnerships—now serving 1.6 million customers nationwide.

A special chapter of the dinner also marked the 15th anniversary of the UK Pavilion’s debut at Expo 2010 Shanghai. Former British Consul-General in Shanghai and BritCham Shanghai’s UK Advisory Board member, Carma Elliot, CMG OBE FRSA, attended from the UK, noting that both milestones celebrate partnership, creativity, and the enduring friendship between the two nations.
During the evening, she presented an honorary award to Heatherwick Studio, the creative force behind the UK Pavilion, recognising its contribution to UK-China cultural exchange.

In the closing remarks, Stuart Dunn, Executive Director of BritCham Shanghai, described the celebration as a journey of stories—stories of people and businesses united by a shared belief in partnership, diversity, and innovation.

The Chamber also presented commemorative porcelain plates to government and institutional partners in recognition of their longstanding support. Former Chairs and business partners sent video messages to convey their congratulations.
Looking ahead, BritCham Shanghai will continue to serve as a vital bridge for UK–China trade and cultural exchange, fostering new opportunities for members and British businesses in China, and working together towards a shared, prosperous future.
