Up until his retirement in November 2018, Stephen Corcoran was Principal Lecturer (Professor) in Education and the Director of the International Short Programme Unit at the University of Chichester in the UK.
Stephen has worked as a teacher and teacher trainer in Hong Kong, Japan, France and in the UK. He has undertaken consultancy work in teacher education for the British Council, Shanghai, the British Council, Beijing, the British Council, Japan, the University of Cambridge Local Examination Syndicate (UCLES), the Hong Kong Institute of Education, the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission (SMEC), the Jiangsu Provincial Education Department (JPED), the Zhejiang Provincial Education Commission (ZPEC) and for the UK Government Department for International Development in Sudan and Togo.
Stephen has considerable experience in designing and managing customised short programmes for Inspectors of Education, Regional Advisers, School Principals, Teacher Trainers, University English Teachers, Heads of English Departments/Curriculum Leaders, Bilingual English Teachers and Secondary and Primary teachers from many different countries including the People’s Republic of China, Thailand, Spain, Malaysia, Portugal, Italy, Russia, Bhutan, Brazil, Korea, Macau, Vietnam and Hungary.
In the Republic of China, he has designed programmes for education professionals from the following Provinces and cities:
Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu, Chongqing, Shenzhen, Jiangsu Province, Zhejiang Province, Shandong Province, Guangdong Province, Shanxi Province, Shaanxi Province, Guizhou Province, Hebei Province, Hubei Province, Fujian Province, Liaoning Province, Heilongjiang Province, Ningxia Province, Hainan Province, Gansu Province, Sichuan Province, Henan Province and Anhui Province and in addition for University Lecturers and Professors from Beijing Normal University, East China University of Politics and Law and the North West Minorities University.
As a result of this experience, the University of Chichester became an approved overseas university by the State Administration of Foreign Expert Affairs (SAFEA) and was included on the People’s Republic of China’s National List of Officially Approved Overseas Institutions on 28 December 2016 (University of Chichester, ID: 174401)
Stephen’s research interests include the evaluation of in-service teacher education courses and the transitions in learning strategies made by international students when crossing academic cultures.
In addition to experience in designing and developing academic programmes, Stephen has considerable programme validation experience and experience in quality assurance and quality management.
His topic for the webinar will be quality assessment and quality assurance systems in Higher Education, the role of education in developing global citizens, the hallmarks of a 21st century student and the structures and strategies to support international students. Stephen will be quoting from his own experience and his own research with international students making the transition to studying in western educational systems.
